Any lawyer can claim to practice elder law. A Certified Elder Law Attorney
(CELA) must have several years of work in the discipline and pass a rigorous
examination to prove his or her knowledge of tax, public benefits, trust and
other disciplines comprising elder law. CELAs are required to update their
skills and knowledge throughout their careers and are subject to peer review. There are over 500 CELAs in the United States and all are members of the National Elder Law Foundation, which manages the test and
processes that are part of it.
